We used to have a covey at 3200ft on The Mountain. Last one I saw was under my bird feeder and that has been at least 10 years ago. Grouse are doing strong...

Don't see or hear many Blue Jays or whippoorwills either. There might be a connection.

    Jab,
That’s encouraging to hear about the grouse. I figured with all of the downpours we had throughout May they would have ended up in a river as turtle food.

If there is we don't see it. Plenty of blue jays and am hearing a few whippoorwills these days. Two small 50ish acre tracks of land were clear cut a couple years ago on either side of the farm and that is where we hear the whipps and bob whites. Jays are everywhere in the woods. No secret we don't have good cover for ground nesters but usually we still see a couple broods of turkeys each season and haven't this year. Blue birds are rocking along still. Found another box with 5 white eggs yesterday.

Whippoorwills are everywhere at the house. Late evening every day and I hear them when I'm leaving for work at 0445 in the mornings.

A buddy and I were standing around yesterday and heard a bobwhite whistle. I answered and within several minutes, we had at least five different birds answering along with a couple females covey calling. One cock bird flew across the pond and landed 40 feet from us and started whistling.

Also flushed a pair of birds out of a fall deer blend patch a couple weeks ago.

Birds will probably start repopulating right as the whole place gets ruined by the influx of Volvo workers looking for their little piece of country life.

Yessir. I have 2 hens at the house with broods that chirp around all day long. Ruffed Grouse are way more vocal than most people give them credit for. Probably for the better, because you can call in a cock in a skinny minute...
