Still comes down to shot placement same as any critter. 308 is real common like up here and takes a lot of bear and moose.. Most of our shots are less than 200yds as we call them in usually in grown over clearcuts. If you're going to shoot mountain top to mountain top take your "reach out and touch someone" shooter. 300 win mag would be a winner.

Don’t go in under gunned to kill them. No point in it. They are big as hell. You want to anchor them where you shoot them. You don’t want them in a gully you can’t get him out of.

The moose I killed, I shot 3 times with a .300wsm at ~80yrs. They soak it up. I would have kept shooting if he didn’t fall.

I have zero experience, but I dream a lot. I talked to a guy once who goes out west every year. He told me that every back woods store has 12 gage shells and 30-06 bullets on the shelf. Just something to think about.

Elk and moose get right excited by a 270.

My FIL has been going to Alaska, almost every year, for over 50yrs. He and his father have killed everything that lives in AK many times over. FIL has never owned a rifle with a caliber over 30-06 and his father killed it all with a .308...yes, even multiple grizzlies.

Unless of course you are looking for an excuse to buy another gun? That is completely understandable and rational.

If you shoot him on top of a mountain, will he fall down and meet you halfway? Seems like the first option is the best unless you’re on top of a mountain. I’m not crazy about hills anymore, flatland is easier.
Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

They are usually very inconsiderate and fall down in the most inconvenient spot for retrieval. In the mountain top case he will no doubt fall half way down the opposite side and laugh with his dying grunt. It's what they do.With a good hit in the vitals they usually don't go too far if they're not DRT but will go die in the deepest , thickest piece of bog out of spite.
I figger any 270 and over caliber 180 gr flat shooting round will do the job superbly. Know your weapon of choice , go to the range and shoot lots and shoot often. Accuracy is the key. I like the big guns because you get a mile long muzzle flash at night Just kiddin.

^^ also a very good choice that would fit the bill extremely well with easily available factory loads.

The best response in the whole thread. If you were to shoot a white moose, just give up on life, its over anyways.

300 Win Mag or 7mm Rem Mag. IMO you'll have a lot more selection for factory ammo/bullet combinations.

30-06..300 Win Mag..7 Rem Mag.....Available at most any sporting store anywhere in a pinch. No need to get too fancy. Your anticipated yardage and skills should dictate. I've taken elk with all 3 at far further distances than I care to brag about.
