Default elk and moose hunting gun shoice

going up to Canada this year to try and get on an elk and moose. I shoot a weatherby 270 now and love the weatherby mark V guns. I was thinking about trying to get a 300 weatherby any thoughts from your guys on what the ideal gun would be for this application. the one thing holding me back is the 300 weighs in at nearly 10 lbs empty with out a scope or ammo.

    What's wrong with the .270?

375 weatherby. Then you can shoot 375 H&H in a pinch. 300gr nosler partition.

Why don't you just take a .50bmg? There is no such thing as over kill.
I take an PLB in the shower with me. Can't ever be too safe.

You got all you need with the right bullet. Want is something different, I can tell you after owning a .300wby I don’t want another one. Didn’t do any more than a .300wm but burned more powder and was a temperamental POS.
Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

In our gang more moose have been whacked with 30:06s . I've used 270,30:06 300wby mag. My favorite is 300 wby mag in 220 gr (really makes their eyes water). This year I'm taking the 338RUM. Sometimes just dead isn't good enough. My rifles are remington 700's.

That .270 will be just fine. Hell, folks kill moose and elk with bows all the time. No need to overthink caliber.

    If you hand load: 300wsm, 300wby, 300rum, 30nos, 30-378, etc.

    Factory ammo: 300 win mag

If you have no intention in hand loading don’t back yourself in a corner with a less than common cartridge.
