    Default Antler max/protein

Anyone put protein out? See a noticeable improvement? How much is needed to make a difference.

Unless your deer are used to a gravity feeder and don’t mind using it regularly I’d say it’s a waste of money

We've used protein the past 3 years with great success. Feeding about 40 tons a summer.

All of our feeders are the trough style.

Yes, it does make a difference

40 tons for how many acres? How much will your feeders hold and how often do you fill them up?

5000 acres. Each feeder holds about 250 pounds. Right now we are only feeding 1 bag per week. In two weeks we’ll ramp it up and then from July to August when t usually gets dry they can eat 250 pounds per day if you’re there to keep them filled. The dryer it gets, the more they eat.

Roof over the troughs? Do y'all have drainage holes cut in them to let any water run out that gets in? I've always seen that troughs work better than gravity feeders.

Thanks gut. I've been putting out 100 lbs a week in a trough feeder. Trying to figure out if I'm wasting my time or not. Moonlight I made my trough out of scrap lumber and tin I had laying around. I thought about drilling holes but the roof has done well so far. 8" of rain in the last week and no evidence of rain in the feeder.

Any trouble with hogs or bears with your setup?

Hogs get in ours some, but only when it's really full. They aren't tall enough to eat the protein once it gets below the rim of the feeder.

We started with antlermax because it handles moisture better than anything, then we switched to roasted soybeans which we believe to be a lot better but the trans cost was outrageous this year so we went back to the antlermax. It takes several years to show up because the fawns need to be grown on it. You can feed a deer all you want, but from what I have read and seen to be true, if it is not healthy as a fawn, a deer will never reach its full potential.
