    Default Blue bird egg color

Seeing multiple clutches of pure white eggs this year. Did a little online searching and seems the belief this is due to overall health of the laying hen. White meaning not great, blue meaning good health. Some comments stating could be result of wet spring, hard winter which is pretty much what we've had this past year. Curious to see if anyone else has seen similar now or in past. I don't recall ever seeing white blue bird eggs before this year and we raise aplenty.

Never researched the topic. Our birds have started their second clutch this year.

5 eggs in first nest in my box were blue. I think 3 fledged. Forest Acres

How many eggs are you seeing per nest? Females in poor general health will often reduce clutch size.

I think the late, deep freeze killed a lot of "inch worm" caterpillers that fuel birds during migration and breeding. The warbler migration was definately off this year and I suspect for the same reason. So, I do believe the blue bird's might not be as healthy this season.

I had one nest in my box. She laid 5 eggs, but only two hatched.

Spur, if you'd move that box on their pier further out over the water I'd bet you could catch a good bass when the fledgling started coming out.

I haven't had as many nests as normal, but the egg count per nest has been 4-5, all blue, and all have hatched.

The one thing I've seen this year that's been unusual in the past that in the two most productive boxes that get 2-3 hatches per year was that in each case the first batch, or partial batch, of eggs (4 and 2) were buried under a new nest. In the most recent case, the two eggs were rolled to a corner and stuffed down below the nest. It may well be that newcomers took over each nest and just pushed the original bird's eggs aside. Just unusual, that's all.

I do need to build new boxes for next year and am currently looking at a bunch of designs. Will be using rough cut cedar from broken duck boxes, so at least they'll last awhile.
