    Default Fried Fish Eggs

so while sharing some fish pictures with a few buddies over the weekend I mentioned saving the eggs from a few shellcrackers with the intention of frying them up (the same was as fish). One friend mentioned his uncle used to eat fish eggs with grits and he had tried them as a kid but the others said they had never tried it. I don't go to the trouble of saving them on all the fish we catch but I will on a few. They are pretty tasty fried up and dipped in a little brown mustard.

Just curious as to how many people on here have tried them or still save the eggs on occasion?

My dad used to always save and fry the eggs from just about any species he caught. Us kids would fight over them.

my dad used to love shad roe. and grits. he would fry any roe he wanted to. some were a different texture but they were darn sure all edible. I know i've had bream, bass, shad, summer trout, flounder (?) and redfish roe.

Grew up eating Shad roe, always cooked in the oven with bacon on top, never fried.

Cobia, Specs, Spottails, etc.....all good....I've never had bad roe.

My great uncle used to keep bream and crappie eggs. He would batter them like the fish and fry them. They really don't have much flavor. Not worth saving in my opinion. They are about as bland as you can get.

Fried with grits and gravy is the best.you can put some on your forehead and your tongue would beat a hole through your brain to get some extra.

Back when I was younger and single, I worked the evening shift and did a lot of night fishing after work, either flounder gigging or "glow popper fishing". Glow popper fishing is fishing for bream at night with a glow-in-the-dark popping bug on the end of a bream buster or fly rod. Big bream will hit a popper so hard it will make you jump out of your skin and you were never certain if it was actually a bream you were about to land. I've boated bass, bullfrogs, snakes and small alligators....but mostly big titty bream. Some of my best memories were from night fishing excursions.

Many of the bream were full of eggs and I usually saved them to eat. One thing I learned quickly is that is a bad idea to pan fry fish eggs while shirtless. Welding without a shirt is probably safer.
