I've had the opportunity over the years to hear the Osceola, Merriams, Rio, and the Eastern wild turkey all Gobble and just my two cents none can Gobble as hard and long as the Eastern can... This morning was testament to just my two cents. We started walking across the field with the full moon lighting our way. Wasn't long before a bird gobbled on the roost and making our way around the fields edge to him another gobbled closer. We rushed to set up only to have the Longbeard fly down into another field rather earlier than normal. This other field we could not hunt, but we could get in some woods and be within calling distance and maybe just maybe make something happen. Ever since this Longbeard has been on the ground he's been gobbling and a lot. I start calling and working the bird then I realized quick it was 2 Longbeards hammering back at me. I get em fired up then go quite. Long story short I call a few more times and they stopped gobbling for a few minutes. Next time they gobble there 50 yards and I swear the ground shakes. I see shadows of the birds coming into the woods with us. I glance at Billy and he's on the gun and waiting for the shot. I give them a few soft purrs and clucks and they move on in to 30 yards when Billy turns it loose... when he shot the other Longbeard took flight and before I could swing on him Billy pilled him up too... so we were celebrating what had just occurred and starting to take pictures when we both think we here another gobbler. Few minutes Later I hear it again and it's closer but I'm still not sure if it's a gobble. We take a few pics of Billys birds and BAM 120 yards or so a gobble rang out. It's scramble time... Billy hits the dirt I grab the gun and stand behind a tree. Sent some soft yelps his way when Billy said he's in the woods and coming quick. When I finally see the bird he's walking with his head high looking for that Hen. After a quick move to get the gun on the right side of the tree i sent a load of Tungsten to him at 29 yards. It's was surreal the events that had just taken place. With the last few days in the SC turkey season left, these birds gobbled more and harder than I've ever heard before. All three Longbeards responded to the calls like it was the first part of the season. Anyhow it was a great hunt with good fellowship and lots of Gobbling.
