Got in the place I've started calling the Poultry Farm this morning and the creek was out of the banks. The bird I have been after was roosting across the creek last week and being that I had to get to work by 08:00, I wasn't up for wading this morning.
We waited by the creek and listened for a bird. Finally one gobbled around 6:50. We began to move closer but decided to just sit tight and see what would happen. As soon as we sit down, a hen flies out of the tree above us. Five minutes later a coyote comes within 20 yards. My buddy got the coyote to leave except the coyote went toward the gobbler. Great.
Ten minutes pass and he's still on the roost. He finally hits the ground way out in front and responded to the call. We decided to move up easy through the pines making sure to stay out of the thinned rows. We get to 20 yards and I look up and he's 70 yards out running straight to us.
Luckily we had a tree in front of us so I leaned to my left, shouldered the gun and he got to what I thought was 40 yards and stopped. Squeezed the trigger and he dropped at 52 steps. Best spurs I've ever killed. Scooped him up at 7:15 and was at work by 7:45.
10" beard 1 3/8” and 1" spurs. The one inch was recently broken off and hadn't smoothed over yet.
