Saw a hen Woodrow and about 8-10 in tow today. Probably 3-5 days old at that. Seems early considering I saw blue wings 8-10 days ago migrating north.

The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.
Nah man, it's not unheard of for a woodie hen to select a nest spot and have eggs laid in Feb/Mar. Some of those hens will hatch another clutch in July or so. I've seen a hen escorting her week-or-so old clan across the Santee River in mid-August.
The ones whose first nest attempt fails for one reason or another will typically renest. Usually they'll find another suitable nest spot, eat like crazy to replenish their nutrition and try again.

Delta in a nutshell: Breeding grounds + small wetlands + big blocks of grass cover + predator removal + nesting structures + enough money to do the job= plenty of ducks to keep everyone smiling!

Checked my boxes this morning.
Estimated 113 hatched out and made it out of the boxes so far.
Hens still sitting on 104 eggs. (2 are dump boxes unfortunately)
Perfect clutch size - 100% nesting success
A dump box. Hen attempting to incubate 30 eggs.
The aftermath of a dump box, if not completely abandoned, a few hatch but the majority can be lost.
Listen to your elders. Not because they are always right but because they have more experiences of being wrong.
