Pulled out the driveway at 11:10am for a quick lunchtime hunt. I got on the property around 12 and started the walk into several swamp flats calling along the way. I had not heard any gobbles and only having an hour or so to hunt I decided I would head back to the truck and try them another day. At 1pm I was passing back by a flat that I’d already called into but stopped to try again. After two series of yelps I put my call back in my vest and as soon as I zipped the pocket closed I heard a distant gobble. I walked a little ways into the flat and tried him again. This time he cut me off but still a long way out. I called and he gobbled for about 15 mins before I finally went silent. A few mins later he gobbled twice on his own and I knew for sure he was coming at that point. After waiting him out another 10-15 mins he had not showed and as soon as I was about to call again I saw him. He came in on the edge of some thick stuff and finally provided me a shot directly to me left. At the report of the gun he jump straight up and my heart went into my boot. I thought I had missed. He then ran about 10 yds and start flipping and flipping. A missed follow up shot and then one final finishing shot as he tried to run again was what it took to end my season. I had a fantastic season that consisted of 12 total hunts. I was fortunate enough to hear a gobbler at some point on each and every hunt and was also able to see a buddy kill his first. Next season will be all about my oldest son (5) trying to get in front of one, I can’t wait for that to happen!! Thanks for reading my stories fellas!!
