RCW= Cash Cow. Not to be a rain on anyones parade but managing for the RCW on NF land has been one of the most professed excusess by the USFS for the rampant nesting season burns which are certainly not conducive to breeding quail nor turkey.

H Cooper Black State Park seems to have quite a few of the RCW's around. They love those big, tall pines.

WIS describes the species as being "last seen in the Midlands during the mid-1970s." Fort Jackson, McEntire, Manchester, Poinsett, etc. must not be in the Midlands.

if I owned pine trees and saw one, I would never tell a soul

Talked w a guy a while ago who apparently was assigned to watch nests in the mornings and write down the time they leave. After a while of doing this, He said they started leaving at whatever time he started hitting the bottom of the tree

The burn plan and objectives of the USFS usually read in this order.

    1. Fuel Reduction.
    2. Prevention of catastrophic fire ( which certainly didn't help when a recent wildfire occurred in a compartment two weeks ago that had been burned only two years ago, this fire was allowed to cover over 1600 acres before containment and cost the taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars).
    3. RCW habitat management.

I was at Webb with my WB 350 class in ‘84 when Tim Fendley pointed to an RCW nest tree and said, “fellas, jump on that mother fucker right there and ride it out to retirement”.

Don't doubt it one bit Tater. I worked them as well with the USFS. Four of us to a crew weekly for 9 months, hotel rooms, gas, per diem, overtime, crazy equipment etc.. I hope to never climb another cavity tree on a swiss ladder.
