    Default Fruit and Persimmon Trees...

We have an area behind the house we want to make into an orchard. Peach and apple trees and muscadines. Also we are wanting to plant persimmon trees in a few areas on the property. My questions are these...

    1) best place to acquire the trees?

    2) best time to plant?

    3) apple variety? ( I know it's a personal preference deal but want one that will thrive)

Get the little small green apples. Don't know what variety they are, but that is what granny had in her yard up thar. They will be easier for your litter to shove lots of them in their pockets for apple fights in a few years.

    Granny Smith?

My granny had the little green apples too. She called them July apples. I dug a couple of sprigs up and replanted them at my place about 15 years ago. They've both made the last three years. As far as persimmons my neighbor ordered some Asian type offline a few years back, they make now and get as big as a tennis ball. Can't keep the deer away though. I can find out where he ordered from if you'd like. Oh, and my granny was not a Smith. She made the best fried pies with those little green apples. Fried them in lard.

Probably the Fuyu Persimmon Tree. I've read a lot of stuff about them.

Will do. Once ripe that variety is sweet , no bitterness. Don't have to wait for a killing frost. His wife makes preserves with them in September.

    Persimmons aren’t apples

    That’s the difference

I read that the best persimmons trees are local (maybe Virginia) root stock with grafted Asian limbs. There was a place in Georgia that carried them (years since I checked).

Persimmons are single sex trees and you will need at least one male nearby to get any fruit.

What visor said. Call hallmans farms.

Pears and crabapples were the main fruit trees I planted. But I'm too far south for apples to do well. Not sure if you can still do bare root or not. It's pushing it on the timing.

Oh and fuck Walmart and their shitty little fruit trees. You'll get a better tree for less at hallmans.

And I'd suggest tree tubes. He can hook you up with those too.

Fuyu’s are awesome. Planted a few 8 years ago and I doubt they are 2 ft taller than when planted. Makes about 6 a year, but they are dang good.

Those jujubes are pretty dern tasty, we've got some planted in our little orchard.. I like those Asian pears too, we planted eight or so silly deer eating pears, but I go for those Asians we have on the edge of the woods.
