and I tip the shit out bartenders in busy bars. I almost got in a fight in New Orleans last June because the bartender would serve me every time I walked up and other mouth breathers had to wait. Of course the bartender explained economics to them and had them escorted out.....
This describes my tipping pretty well. I'm almost exactly the same, except at a sit-down place, it totally depends on the service we receive. I generally won't go below 10%, but exceptional service may get 30+%.

This time 2 and 3 years ago your above post described my time at Sues to a T, 3-4 nights a week and knew a few waitresses quite well. Now I have a steady GF and all but I still manage to eat there at least once a week.

Their finger dippin good keeps me coming back even if the service does suck most of the time.

I have no issues tipping 20-30 percent when I feel my "server" goes above and beyond. With that being said, if my tea glass stays empty for more than a few minutes that tip goes down a fucking lot.

I won't tip because you carried a bag to my car from 15' away.

There has been a lot of nights where my card company has called me to verify because my tip was more than my sub total for bartenders.

I wish people would give me an extra 20-30% for doing my job...

this, its all relevant to effort and level of service.

Advice for non-tippers, don’t go tot the same restaurant often. College students are capable of anything and lack judgment at times.

If it's ready when they say it will be or if the waitress brings it out to the truck I'll tip.

Servers are also required to "tip" 10 to 20% of their gross sales to runners and bartenders, so its a double screw to the person that put your to go food in the system if you do not tip that person. I typically tip 15% on to go food.
If you "only make $2.13 an hour," GET A DIFFERENT JOB. No one is telling you to stay. People stay because they would rather gamble on making a big pay day with tips than a conservative wage. So dont complain when you choose to gamble, and then lose by not making good tips that day. That is your choice. Just my 2 cents.

One of my number one rules in life is I don't fuck with people that make or are around my food while I'm not watching them. That being said, I don't tip less than 15-20% when I sit down and eat and usually give something when picking up food as well just because its the right thing to do. Also living in a rural part of the state with few options for lunch/dinner out people remember who you are and if you treat them good they usually go out of their way to give you great service on future visits. 765$ takeout order they should have left a tip but you also shouldn't go on facebook crying about shit either.

You certainly don't have to work in the food service industry, it is a choice. It is also your right to withhold for bad service or service you don't feel merits a tip.

That being said, I tip good service, bad service, a little or a lot of service. I don't know what is going on in those people's worlds or their lives at the time, but if a little grace extended through some dollars that I personally don't need will help someone out, it's not that big of a deal. Don't get me wrong, I'm plenty principled and plenty stubborn, but life's just too damn short.

I tip like motha, I want them to know me if they don't. I don't care about a couple few bucks. I want them to push me through the line if there is one, and with a smile. I like service.

But, I rarely go out to eat at night. I pick up maybe once a week from one place or another. I'm a wholesaler to the restaurants in my area so I try to support them, they're my customers also.

gotta agree with river rat and HS. I tip all the time. at least 15%. You'll get more if you treat my wife or daughter well. I will tip for carryout but not a great deal...

I tip at sit down restaurants but you have to admit it’s kind of dumb to pay some chick at Outback $10 to take your order, bring you a few items and fill your glass a couple times. $10 for about 15 minutes of unskilled work is pretty crazy in the grand scheme of things.
