I do not tip for takeout although I rarely use that anyhow. I do try to be a good tipper if there has been good service. I tipped a bartender 30% Saturday night because I was enjoying 10 year old Blanton's and he was pouring a good one. He also gave us extra bread and other items because the kitchen was really slow. I could tell the dude wanted us to enjoy our time so we tipped him accordingly. I gave a waitress at the British Bulldog a minor tip recently because she absolutely could not keep cold glasses on the table for us to drink their $5.95 draft beers from.

The term “Server” is a gender neutral liberal bullshit term.

I typically tip 15% on to go food.
So why do they work there if it's so bad? I mean restaurants have to pay what the market demands otherwise there wouldn't be people to work those jobs. Why do I "screw" the person bagging the food if I don't tip? Am I really supposed to tip someone for putting a box of food in a plastic bag? I mean how much effort is required in that deal? Is it really that much of a material effort that one should receive 15% of the bill to place food in a bag?

By the way, my question doesn't mean I won't tip someone when I pick up a to go order. But I'll be damned if I'm gonna be shamed into paying someone to bag my food.

Its pretty damn good, the girls look good (most of them) and its about 2 min from the house. I think its actually the cooks cause most of the time my food order is wrong.

Do you tip when you pick up carry out at the Liquor store? If not, why would you tip when you pick up at a restaurant? The tip is for service other than just the sale, IMHO.

Yeah I don't really get "they bagged your order" argument. When I sit down at a restaurant, the cook plated my food, but he didn't get a tip.

I have no problems tipping 20%+ for good service. But I have to be able to see and judge a service to base that on.

    20% - 30% on sit down meals.
    20% for deliveries.
$2 - $3 bucks for takeout or places like Moe's where they make it in front of you.

No way hell would I tip when picking up takeout. I always tip 20% when sitting down to eat but the whole concept is ridiculous to me.

^^^ Agreed. I'll happily tip as I see fit, but it is not my responsibility to pay the restaurant's employees.

Another former server here, most don't know this but a couple of fyi's for thought: yes $2.13/hr is the minimum for a server however, if the tips received by the server do not add up to what the server would have made by the standard $7ish minimum wage then the restaurant is required by law to make up the difference. Many server's and patrons for that matter are unaware of that and don't take the employer to task and that law. And here is the catch why: it also requires that servers would need to report all of their tips to prove they didn't meet the minimum.... most dont report cash tips because they generally will make more than minimum wage (if you're at a decent establishment) and don't want to pay taxes of their full earnings.

    Also,
I don't tip on take out.

I am a better than average tipper when served, but I see no need to tip someone when I walk in and give someone legal tender in exchange for a product that they sell to the general public just because they put it in a box/bag instead of on a plate. There was no service provided to me above the sale of the product. Do you tip the guy/gal at the local 5 and dime for selling you some shampoo and aspirin? Tip the lady at Belks that rings up your underbritches?? Local establishments that call us by name when the wife and I walk in are a different story altogether....

The scenario you presented is an issue within the organization itself and is of no concern nor consequence to me. Nothing is more aggravating than to have someone prompt me for a tip at a self serve restaurant, who has done nothing to earn it other than doing what they are being paid to do in the first place. What is their compensation for doing that task??? No dog in that fight either...

    I tip. Always

    $1-$2 Moes

    10-15% takeout (depends on speed)

    min 20% sit down

min $5 for valet, taxi or cart guy.

and I tip the shit out bartenders in busy bars. I almost got in a fight in New Orleans last June because the bartender would serve me every time I walked up and other mouth breathers had to wait. Of course the bartender explained economics to them and had them escorted out.....

I do not tip on take out, unless you are the guy delivering pizza to my house. That guy gets 20% just like a good waitress or bartender when I am dining out. If it’s crappy weather, maybe 25% for working harder. Now, if my glass of tea runs dry, then you my friend have just earned yourself a small pittance of the tip you would normally receive. Not zero, but so small it will really piss them off.

Good service is to be rewarded or it will stop. Bagging up chicken fingers and soggy fries should not. Maybe that can serve as motivation for some to apply themselves and move up to a job with higher income potential.

Do you tip the amazon warehouse worker who boxes up your order and sends it to you?
