    Default Dog pens help

I have a lean-to off a storage building and looking for some ideas to build a pen under it. Trying to keep it in budget are there any other things you can use on the bottom other than concrete or plain dirt? I have seen some people use wood as a sub floor. Also what about hog panels as the sides? If y'all have some pictures you could share I'd appreciate it. Thanks Coot

Do you like your dog? If so- why is it in prison? Even my deer dogs( when I had them) got to run.
Treat them right or don't have them.

My dogs are treated right and get to run plenty but I also have a responsibility to keep them safe. They go to the kennels when I leave for work and come out when I get home.

I've heard wood floors in a dog pen are basically just a breeding ground for germs and disease

Looks like a nice system. It would be nice to be able to feed and water without going in the kennel.

    Video from his post above.

Concrete is best. Concrete pavers will also work, and are easy to move if you decide to. I built a deck to put mine on because it is low, and prone to flooding during big rains. I have heard people say that wood is can cause issues with germs and disease, but there have not been any problems that I have seen. I also spray the pen down with bleach several times a year. I built it in 2003, and have only had to replace a few of the boards so far.

Concrete. Especially if you do not plan to move in the near future.

Concrete will also keep the dog's nails filed down

I have galvanized grate in bottom of my Kennels. The bottom of floor is 4 ft off ground. Everything falls through floor so I don't have to spray pens out.

With floor being open it is never wet or moist like boards and concrete will be.
I have had these Kennels with grate for 16 years and floor is still in shape it was when I built them.

I also built all of my Kennels so I can pick them up with forks on tractor and move to clean out from under them if need be.

The grate is expensive but worth more than every penny I paid for it.

One more advantage from grate is dogs pads get tougher and I have never had a dog get sore footed since I switched to grate over dirt, wire, and wood flooring.

I used chain link for wire and it has held up great. Only disadvantage is whatever height chain link you have is what your Kennels height had to be since you can't cut it shorter like all other wire.

I switched to horse panels for wire on my last few Kennels I built and it is stiff and you can cut it to fit any length or height of pen. It is galvanized also.

Chain link is just cheaper and will hold up for at least 16 years.
