I don't get how folks that are needing to pawn off their dogs on other people, say it's got to be the right home, etc..., and then say they're charging a "re-homing" fee.

Maybe they do that to discourage folks who want the dogs as bait for fighting folks, I don't know. I know if I found a good person to take a dog that I couldn't keep, I certainly wouldn't try to charge them for it.

Considering Golden puppies are selling for $1K or more, I'd say a "re-homing" fee of $100 is a pretty good deal on a healthy AKC registered Golden.

Not only that, but with the volume of dog fight rings still being found it is foolish and thoughtless to offer any pet for "free". If the adoptees are felt to be sincere an owner can always waive any fees. Personally, I think most people tend to take better care of things, including pets, if they have a little skin in the game, so to speak.

I just "re-homed" a 9 month old (the one in the pic), 9 month old, AKC and all health records. Beautiful, sweet and smart male dog, just what I wanted
and completely house trained. Lady asked for $200 to cover her vet bills.......I couldn't pull my money out fast enough.

Tigerbdog, while in your case it's disappointing that there are so many fewer Goldens available for adoption now, it's actually good news overall. Not too many years ago there were so many "backyard-bred" Goldens being dropped at shelters and surrendered to rescue groups they were being shipped out of state just to find them homes. FHGRR used to adopt out 12-15 dogs a month!

While there are none shown on the web page, I'll make a contact and see if there are any in their foster system that haven't been promised or advertised yet and let you know.

Good luck in your search, and thanks for looking for a older dog. Of our eight Goldens since '92, seven were adopted, and the ages of six of them ranged from three to twelve years old. All were great indoor pets and companions, with the first two being solid hunters.
Best thing that's happened to the golden retriever is the golden doodle!!

Do you, by chance, eat Tide Pods for your weekend amusement?

Yes, I'm sure there are some good Golden Doodle mutts out there, but there are no doubt many X's more great Golden lines still around, particularly in the field lines.

I don’t think you get what I was saying. I love Goldens and am glad that something else has come along as the “designer dog” with the wonderful temperament of the golden so soccer moms can have doodles riding in their minivans and doing backyard breedings with rather than true goldens. The commercialization and popularity of the breed was depleting the natural hunting abilities and hunting instincts of the golden retriever breed. As someone that’s had a below average bred golden and a top notch bred lab a few little things were apparent to me about their difference. Mainly my golden’s nose and home manners were far superior to the lab while my lab has more drive and handles the harsh conditions of late winter much better. My golden was better in the dove field and my lab is better in icy cold January water. Goldens fit my family lifestyle better and no matter what kind of bird dog I have that bird dog will pick up a hell of a lot more birds every year than most others. Won’t be any doodles around my house hold!!

Ahh... my apologies for misunderstanding your meaning. I've gotten so used to the scarcity of serious and meaningful posts on here anymore that you caught me by surprise. Again, my apologies.

I completely agree with your comments, although I'll add that I know a guy down in TX who got a Golden-Doodle for his wife after his oldest Lab died and it actually turned out to be a fairly decent duck hunter. As with any dog, the breedlines make the difference.

I started with Labs, years back, and my BLF's grand dam was the highest scoring Lab in field trial history as of the early 80's... blue blood through and through. Unfortunately, all of that blue blood caused her to have immunity problems and her brain wasn't wired quite right. Sweet as a dickens, she could run like the wind, and would retrieve anything until the cows came home, as long as you didn't fire a gun or she didn't hear thunder. On the other hand, before I got her I got a YLM of British lines who was a fantastic obedience dog and would hunt with me until I forced him to come home.

Got into Goldens by accident one rainy, May weekend by adopting a neighbor's 'nervous Nelly', and after six months of work she was on her way to obedience titles, therapy-dog certification, and numerous hunt test ribbons. Seven Goldens later and I'm sure we'll have them as long as we can find good ones, and particularly rescues, until I have time to train another hunting dog.

Glad he found a great home. I think another litter is on the way, waiting for vet visit for confirmation.

Fwiw, we're also on the lookout for another young male for adoption... preferably about 1-3 years old, and not an alpha dog since the 4.5 yo we've got is fairly soft.

Tigerbdog, still keeping any eye out for your specs on one. Have you submitted an application to FHGRR yet, or will you be?

She lost one but 10 sucking away. I'll be posting the litter once we get counts and pictures. Most all are dark colored.
