    Default Auto Oiler

I have a 1999 Merc 40 3 cylinder with the auto oiling system. Should I consider removing it or are these reliable? I have never consider it , but just read about a Yamaha one that went bad. Anyone have firsthand experience with this model?

    Thanks,
    Mike

I had one with my old Evinrude 60. It's nice not messing with mixing oil but if I did it again I'd probably take it out. Buddy of mine who knows way more about boats thought I was crazy running with oil pump.

    DDS,

    How did you do yours?

I read you can block the oil line before the T fitting, pull out the gear in the oil pump and just reinstall the pump.

    Thanks,
    Mike

That’s right. Merc 40s are fun trying to get the pump and gear out, there’s a black tab that gets in the way

I didnt even take the gear out. just plugged the lines and let it ride. its been 3+ years like that and several, if not dozens of hundred miles.

Holy aggrevating black tab thingy. Can I cut/grind it out of the way? The deep wall socket hits it and the shallow wall is to short.

    Thanks

I removed the one off of my Yamaha. I feel much saved adding pre-mix. I always know the oil is there.

The risk you run by not removing it is the auto oiler failing and your motor locking up from lack of lubrication.
