    Default Swan hunt this am

Traveled out to Elizabeth City last night to hunt with good friends on a swan hunt we booked. Had some other guys that needed to fill their tags too so we all hit the field this morning and had a great hunt. 12 adults and 3 youth filled their tags by 11 am. Had a great time.

It's a shame they aren't legal in SC. My son and I could have filled a pickup truck with them yesterday. Lots of fun watching them but would have loved to see the splash they would have made.

When do they normally do the swan permits? Who was the outfitter you booked with?

    Nice birds.

Congratulations. I bet you can still hear their songs echoing in your head. Swan hunting is more than just shooting a big bird.

How does swan compare (taste) with the rest of the normal birds we get?

The breast meat is dark, tough and has a musky flavor - not necessarily bad but certainly different.

The legs and thighs are more "white" are great...

I think we usually apply for the permits in October we usually do a party hunt. I think they allocate about 6,000 permits a year. We have hunted with Dustin Wilkins 2 times at Fish Duck guide service in Elizabeth City and he has put us on them every time.

Application deadline is 10/1. The state issues 6500 permits per year. Selection is via preference points, but a small allotment are reserved for hunters w/o a preference point.
