I have heard old age could cause them to get dark like this but what do you think these dark colors are on the head? Just old age?

Dock duck
Not hunting around a lake or anything where dock ducks would be so that’s why I didn’t think of that

Avian syphilis. Seen it a million times.
Eclipse plumage...
It’s got a little widgeon in it.
Do you people not ever notice that despite the fact that mallards make up a small percentage of the overall duck harvest in this state, almost all of these so called hybrids, old hens, hermaphrodites, blonde phases, etc. are of mallard lineage? They're just about all inbred and crossbred farm, dock, and tamie ducks. Facebook and Instagram are full of people posing with these things claiming they are a migratory trophy fresh from Saskatchewan.
I see it all the time.
It’s ridiculous and comes from people not knowing crap about ducks.
Imagine if rabbit hunters shot and proudly posed with tan and white floppy eared state fair bunnies claiming “look at this rare, piebald swamp rabbit.”
I’m embarrassed they hunt ducks.
Be proactive about improving public waterfowl habitat in South Carolina. It's not going to happen by itself, and our help is needed. We have the potential to winter thousands of waterfowl on public grounds if we fight for it.
That one is from Manitoba.
We gave you Corn, you gave us clap, bad trade.
One page is running a "hybrid photo contest," and the dock ducks outnumber the true hybrids. Between that and the SC Duck Hunting Facebook page ( (it rivals its deer hunting counterpart page) debates on blacks, mottleds, and hybrids, it's a wonder that more grebes aren't getting hero-shot infamy on tailgates
