They're getting harder and harder to tell apart but that's pretty much a mottled duck.
The speckled throat isn't normal for a mottled duck but I'm seeing it more and more frequently. The edged coverts rules out a drake black and the yellow bill rules out a black hen. The orange-ish body feathers noticable in the top photo are typical for a mottled. The black at the gape of the bill is very typical for a mottled duck too.
I could believe PBiz's hybrid theory but just don't know how a non-migratory mottled could get mixed up with a black that seldom breeds south of Virginia.

This one came in with a black duck hen which confused us more. Every identifying method we researched said that it wasn't a foolproof method (white trailing edge, black on the gape, etc). I'm curious as to how a game warden would've counted it in our limit.

It's two different ducks.
That's a mottled. The end

Nick, was killed in the upstate?
I agree.... Two different birds!
So, you have to ask the species but you're certain if came in with a black hen!

My god you are full of shit. It's the same damn bird. I'll take more pictures later if you need proof. It was evident the hen was pure black duck. No signs of being a mottled at all. Not the case with this one. We tried using the DNR publication first but it contradicts itself. This is the picture of the bird in the blind.

Now it's possible I misidentified the hen. Again, this was our first time shooting either blacks or a mottled. But there were no white trailing edges like shown in the DNR pamphlet. Also, the speculum had a more blue appearance even though not so much in this picture. This was the hen:

I change my answer. The hen is a black because of the greenish bill - no doubt. Hen mottled ducks always have an orange bill.
The drake looks 100% American Black Duck in the new photo. The orange look to the body feathers is not noticeable and the buff edging to the shoulders is not nearly as prominent. The black at the gape is almost nothing. If you are in the wing survey, I think the drake would come back as an immature black.
Here's a confusing mottled duck - black speckles in the throat and no white trailing edge...but the black at the gape and tinged shoulders are noticeable and it has the orange colorization...
