Glad to hear you’re getting it mounted. Take it to Shane Smith like Chuck said. You won’t be disappointed. He’ll tell you too exactly what it is.

I had a pretty knowledgeable person tell me they thought it was a cross between a wigeon and mallard.

I sent the pictures out so hopefully I'll have an answer this coming week, I'll copy and post the discussion here in your thread. I agree about mallard/wood duck but wood duck/pintail also fits. The thing that is throwing me off is the mix of drake and hen characteristics. Might have yourself a hermaphrodite, haha.

It's got me completely baffled! I've looked through hundreds of hybrid pictures online but nothing looks anywhere close. The White line under the speculum resembles a
Wood duck along with the black saddle on bill. They feet are like a black duck and he's dark. The head looks speckled like a wigeon and has a green top. The bird is plump and round like a wigeon and the size of one.

It's a wood duck x mallard hen like everyone has told you. If you are in doubt, go post it on this group --> "The Hybrid Club" and you'll get the same answer.

You can also donate tissue if you'd like https://hybridduck.blogspot.com/p/shot-hybrid.html

    Cool bird.

Hypothetical question. How do you count something like that on your limit? I'd imagine with this bird you would get a pass and count it what you want. And I'm not implying you did anything wrong. Just curious how dnr handles these hybrids.

Joern has a nice site with some examples of wood duck x mallard hybrids.

Not doubting that it is in fact a mallard/wood duck cross, but the thing that gets me is neither sex of either mallard of wood duck species really has a green speculum.

Well, I have 2 options as to what to do with the bird. 1.) keep the bird for myself and mount it. Or 2.) donate the bird to a research university Duckman88 hooked me up with that is REALLY interest in it.

So...if I keep it for myself it will be cool and all but I will never really know what it is. If I donate the bird, I'll have pictures, a nice letter from the university acknowledging my donated bird and will receive a detailed report as to the identity of the birds and its parents. I think I'm just gonna take one for the team in the name of science and let her go. It will be preserved and added to the largest collection of hybrid waterfowl in the USA.

A picture of said bird framed with the letter of donation would make for a nice presentation.

What UGA said. Donate it and the picture with the letter in a nice custom frame/matting.

I guess when said lab does its thing, Shane wouldn't be able to work any magic with what's left of the bird?

Not if I donate it to them. I could just send them a tissue sample but they would like the whole bird to be able to do a full in depth study and add it to their collection.8 They actually remove the wings and preserve them stretched out then skin the bird out and do a rough mount. It is assigned a number placed in their collection for comparison and study indefinitely.
