    Default Choke Pattern

Which is the better pattern for ducks? Both shot at 30 yards at a 30" circle, Kent fast steel 3" #4's 1 1/2 oz. Remington V3 factory mod and full chokes.

Everything looks good at 30 yards. The golden measurement is 40. Either of those patterns is fine at 30.

242 pellets in the circle with the full choke, 225 with the mod choke. Mod choke is spread out more throughout the circle than the full, obviously.

Mod. You could also drop to 5s for 30yds and that pattern would fill out some.

I still have never patterned a gun that I use for ducks, and I shoot a factory IC choke. I just don't get it. And for the people that are concerned with their pattern at 40 yards, if you are consistently having to shoot birds that far, you are doing something wrong.

most on the times the factory chokes recommend don't shoot steel out of a full. I have with no problems but them recommend you dont.

A light modified is the best choke for any situation from 0-30yds.

I didn't pattern a bird gun for 40-11 years either, just hunted. It was when I began to pattern for turkey hunting that made me realize some shotguns won't shoot where you are pointing them or won't shoot a particular brand or load worth a crap, even at 30 yards. I'm talking the pattern below the bead or more than half off left or right. I patterned a couple rounds of steel just to gain confidence in the gun/load same as checking zero on a deer rifle or bow.
