    Default Velvet beans?

I was reading an old seed brochure from a company down in Georgia that mentioned velvet beans with a lot of enthusiasm. Supposedly, they grow in about any dirt and help control nematodes, weeds, diseases and insects. They also really help build soil and help peanut yields in successive plantings. And deer love them. Anybody ever planted them? Anybody know where to get seeds for them this spring?

I don't know anything about them, but the fact that they push them into a peanut rotation is enough for me to discount their claims. It can be done, but having 2 legumes in a crop rotation is not an easy task, and generally not as profitable either.

We planted 2 acres of them in the middle of a 6 acre bean field..

The deer walked past the soybeans to eat the velvet beans..

But I’m sure Salt Muck has his QDMA/4H Club card, so I wouldn’t plant them if I were you..

You said nematodes, and the resident nematode professional is Sportin Woodies. He knows his nematodes after years of research

I remember my grandfather talking about the bucks they used to kill in the backyards of some of the older black folks around awendaw in the 50’s . Velvet beans were planted in every garden patch according to him.

My dad's standard reply to the question of "What's for supper?" was "swamp cabbage and velvet beans".

So it comes back year after year? I googled it and first two things i saw were it increases testosterone and it grows like kudzu. I don't need either. At least not yet. One day I might need some kudzu.

I vaguely remember a pamphlet discussing them by a Dr Jones, "How to be a bean".

It's an annual so I wouldn't expect it to be as invasive/noxious as kudzu.

I've also read it can be itchy. It's even called "cowitch".

The cheapest I've found it online is $15/lb and it should be planted a 10lb/acre.

    Whackumstackum, can ya'll get it?

Here is a place that has it down to 3.50 a lb if you buy it in 50lbs.
