That is up for debate. Some states have wised up and are totally outlawing sport hunting for hogs because they know that where you have hog hunters, you will always have hogs.

You want to get rid of pigs then make it illegal to hunt them. Period.

Are hogs the only wildlife that the ingredients of clay pigeons are toxic to?

^not to pick on you, but....

flouride will kill people if given in high enough doses.
I dont see dead critters surrounding all sporting clays courses.

Ergo, a bunch of clay pigeons on the ground doesnt kill anything.

My point is that, unless you stuff a bunch of clay pigeons down a hog's throat, I dont think thats the answer....

Thanks for bothering to reply, 2th, but you're only partially right.

I did get a chance to investigate my question a little, but didn't bother posting what I found since it seemed like the thread had run out of gas.

What it appears to come down to is that, technically, you could grind up enough clay pigeons and mix it with bait and cause some serious liver toxicity, which could/would eventually kill them.

The trick, obviously, would be to find and use a bait that NO OTHER ANIMAL would ingest, which is the issue.

This is also why it is presently illegal to do just that, i.e., grind up clay pigeons and mix it with bait, because sure as shootin' there will be some numbnuts out there who wouldn't care what they mixed it with.

For your reading pleasure and 'edumakashiun'...

    http://www.huntinghog.com/food-habit...to-feral-hogs/

It would seem that broken clay targets mixed with a bait such as soured corn to control wild swine would be a good idea, but don’t do it. The departments of natural resources do not recommend this approach! The toxic materials in clay pigeons are coal tar derivatives, such as cresols and phenols, which are protoplasmic poisons. If used in a bait, any and all wild or domestic animals that consumed the clay pigeon-bait mix would be impacted. This is not an approved way to control feral hogs. It’s illegal and can hurt many of the critters people may even be trying to help.

The poisoning of hogs by the ingestion of clay targets is a horrible death that can be identified by severe hemorrhagic necrosis of the liver. These same harmful ingredients found in clay pigeons are also found in roofing tar and tar paper. They can also cause the same toxicosis in feral hogs. Poisonings of this type have been associated with domestic hogs in confined areas, but researchers are not aware of any cases diagnosed in wild hogs. I’m sure it has happened when feral hogs picked up something dumped out in a pasture, creek or gully. After all, they will eat anything.
    Thanks for your time.

Delicious, I agree. We eat four or five a year. But we don't even put a dent in the population hunting them for sport. Shoot, they can drop three farrows a year. I know they can coexist with deer [we've all seen mud rubs in the same dry sloughs where baby cypress trees have buck rubs on them], but they're absolute hell on ground-nesting wildlife like wild turkeys, etc.

Didn't the formulation change a couple of years back in the clay pigeons? For some reason, I thought the new clays were safer.

No, Mr. 2th, I'm not missing your point. However, you obviously failed to comprehend my comment in your eagerness to be right. Note what I said...

I didn't say it made sense, unless you could get all the scrap pieces from a clay pigeon factory or something. And if you mixed it up in a bait that hogs liked to eat you wouldn't have to shove it down their throats, now would you? Damn...

It's all a moot point anyway since like Meathook said, the formulation has been changed to make them 'eco-friendly'.

Go drink your fluoride and relax.
