    Default Maryland’s Eastern Shore

Took a couple days to hunt the eastern shore of Maryland this week. I’ve been needing a good Common Merganser and Red Breasted Merganser to have all 32 species of ducks in North America mounted. I shot both several years ago, but never had gotten a good drake. I had hunted with Jon a few years ago when I had my yellow lab Daisy. Got a good drake Common then for Daisy to retrieve, along with Brant. I timed it right with the weather. They were coming off the big freeze, and the river opened up on Friday. I was wanting to target Canada Geese too since they get a few subspecies of Canada Goose there. The Mergansers were definitely there. Had 300+ come fly by the blind. Shot a couple nice ones, and my limit of Canada Geese. Yesterday, we hunted a dry bean field from a pit, shooting my limit again of Canada Geese, over a spread of v board decoys. A real classic eastern shore goose hunt. Was a great time. 28C321CE-98D4-4ADE-AE1C-AE481CC99B8D.jpg

She was the last bird of the day. The Golden BB got her. She went sailing down a long way up river. We got in the boat and went after her, and looking for a long hunt with her diving on us. She was stone dead. Perfect shape.

I will agree, there is something cool about a Common.

I like the mounts I have seen in a diving pose... I have killed some, but like a dumbass, didn't mount any.

$250 a day per person. Go in January. Need some good cold weather to get them down there in good numbers. I stayed in Chestertown, Maryland, and hunted on the Chester River. They are all over Pennsylvania, especially if you want to go freelance.

Nice killing. I just started a new job and my first project is on Eastern Shore. Will be there many times next winter and plan to hunt a few times.

Thanks. It was a big relief to get the Common Merganser. I don’t have time to do it this season, but hopefully next season I’ll be able to get a good Red Breasted Merganser drake.

I shot Lesser, Interior/Hudson Bay/Todd’s, and Atlantic. The Hudson Bay and Atlantic subspecies are the most common. When I shot the Lesser, I knew it was something different. It’s call was more high pitched.
