Crazy that we are so unprepared to deal with situations. Why would our combat airplanes not be armed? Sounds about as stupid as unarmed personnel on an army base being sitting ducks to an active shooter.

Most tactical aircraft are not sitting ready for a combat mission. Especially prior to 9/11. Prepping live AAM's for a flight with no purpose but training is likely a pain in the ass.
But there are plenty sitting on deck now with AA armament ready to go, as a direct result.
