    Default Supplemental heat for doghouse?

Do you provide supplemental heat for your retriever's outdoor doghouse in winter? If so, at what temperature and weather conditions do you start the supplemental heat?

I used to have a light bulb hooked up to a drop cord in the top of the dog house. If it dipped down in the low teens I'd plug it up.

ETA: I don't do this anymore. I have a barrel style dog house filled to the brim with cedar shavings and they just hunker down tight in them.

Oats straw with some cedar chips to help offset the funk of swamp water. They are animals that have lived outside for thousands of years with no assistance from humans.

We bring our dogs in when it gets cold. But send our kids outside to sleep. Toughens them up and enhances recovery for travel t ball. They love it!!!

Depends on age and if we are hunting in the a.m. I can tell you that my old man handles the cold better if I leave the heat off in the garage at night.

    No.

There ass' sleeps the same if it's 80* or 8*.

(wind is the killer) In 13 years of owning retrievers, the only time I've done something was when the wind was 20 +mph and temps were below 25*. (That's only been twice) I put them in the dog trailer to shield them from the wind.

If they have a house or barrel they'll be fine.

When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home. -Tecumseh-

My dog house has an HVAC unit. They sleep inside with us at night. The dog house is for when we're at work.

Wind protection is the most important in severe cold. Provide good bedding in a wind proof shelter and you should be good to go.

Adding a heat bulb, like some use for chickens, certainly won't hurt but isn't needed most of the time if the other criteria are met.

    No kidding.

Adaptation is the key and is, of course, regionally specific. It's whatever your critter is used to and has adapted to.
