    Default What to plant now?

The farmer that leases my row crop fields had one cotton field that got flooded early and he had to replant too late. It didn't make in one corner of the field because the deer mowed it down as soon as it came up. I want to drill something to attract deer. What would be best this late in the year? Not trying to make a crop, just trying to get deer in there. Frost would probably get field peas before they got up good. I only intend to plant about an acre.

Two bags of cereal rye. Or oats or wheat. I have a few pounds of leftover rape if you want to throw in with it.

Rape, turnips, oats are good options. Wheat if you want something for the turkeys in the spring.

I'd like to plant something that will pop up quickly. It wouldn't hurt to have something that will mature later and give them something to eat later after the season too.

You need to come over and shoot a deer and catch a mess of bream.

I'm thinking oats. I just don't what kind to get. I can make a run to Wannamakers on Thursday and pick some up.

The spot I wanna hit is a couple of new cutovers. I just want something I can broadcast right before it rains on soft soil.

Buck Brunch is a good cheap mix that has alot of those options. Not sure how it does in a drill but I broadcast some and it has come up well. I'll see if I can find the label but it's oats, wheat, some kind of hybrid wheat, rape and a little clover, etc.

    Added the label

I planted some Buck Brunch a few weeks ago and it did fine in the old drill. I could have sworn it had field peas in it though. I added some peas to the mix just because I had them.

In that situation is really does not get any better than a mixture or wheat and oats .

I'm just hitting spots with a hand broadcaster. Soft dirt done up by the timber folks, bare spots. Will try to hit it right (literally, an hour) before it rains.

Cereal rye or wheat will work if it touches the dirt.
