    Default “He was right there...”

I’ve told myself at least a hundred times...”he was right there for ~1.5 minutes three days ago...and he will be back...and it’ll only be for a minute or so...and The only way to be here when he does is to freaking sit here when you can for as long as you can!” Got a dandy on camera in a great pinch point Thursday morning, and I’m into the second afternoon of an all-day-sit weekend after getting my stand in here during a downpour Friday evening. This is the longest Ive sat without seeing a deer in a long time. WNW winds at 5 (best) to 20 (mostly) at ~35-38 degrees with no deer activity whatsoever has made this the coldest and most difficult to talk myself into staying sit ever. I’ve worn Fox News out and exhausted all my other time killers...figured I’d post this as I battle to NOT go and visit the Swamp! Come on deer! Just need to see one...any size...somewhere!

You don't need a crutch to kill that deer. It's just you and him. I can't wait to see the pictures.

Got pics of a small 6 pt about two minutes after getting to my truck. Drove less than a mile down the road and came up on a woman who flat totaled her Prius-like car in a collision with a deer...I should have stopped and asked her if it was a good one, but there was a cop on the scene, and she didn’t much look like discussing the size of the deer. Going to hold off for the right conditions on Wednesday mid-day thru afternoon...hope to post pics of his tongue soon. Took a break and killed some ducks today...check out the field report forum for some early season duck porn.

I have one pic from the side that shows his tine length...the rest get lost in the corn. His 2s and 3s are all tall. His 2s and 3s come off the main beams about two inches apart and then nothing but main beams for a foot or so to the tips...never really named any deer my first thoughts were "coulda been a 12" and "plenty of room for more" which don't really sound like good deer names...so I went with Beamer. Hope to get up close and personal with him soon...ifn he didn't suffer death-by-Prius last night.

Yep sometimes you gotta make the winning play partner. I dig the decoy thought but wouldn't get to aggressive with size of buck or to aggressive on rattling or grunting.. a little goes a long way. He might be puss.

I tell you, some aspects of hunting private where you’ve obtained permission is worse than dealing with public. On my way in today on first day here with sunshine, kid pulls up and starts questioning me...I answer his questions as I keep walk My down road. He says “I hunt back there” and points in direction of where I’m headed. “Cool” I say. “Where is your stand?”
On Lon’s treeline, I say. “Didn’t know he gave anyone else permission.”
Yup...been hunting here three years. “He told us to run anyone out if we saw anyone back here.” At this point, I stopped walking and turned toward him and said “no, Lon knows I’m hunting here...call him if you need to” in a manner that put the kabosh on his attitude’srise to billy-bad-ass levels. Fucker goes up to his house about 800 yards away from where I’m hunting and wastes about 50$ of 22 ammo like that is going to scare the deer off or mess up
My hunt. Before he did, he said “I’ve got a stand over there on that dead tree (100 yards down the creek) and was going to move it over there...pointing to where I’m hunting. Ladder stand I’m sure and not there 4 weeks ago. That probably explains the sudden lack of deer movement that was going on pretty predictably two weeks ago. Luckily, I got permission from one of my work partners to hunt his 75 acres...which has a lot of big woods surrounded by picked beans and bordering two giant tracts of big woods that both guys manage for and kill monsters off of every year. He lets two other guys...a dood and his very old dad...hunt there, and they have a couple of ladder stands on the edges of the fields. Very excited and hopeful about hunting the peak of the rut there, but also worried about those two guys getting hacked off that my partner is letting me hunt there. They have a lot of other options, unlike me, but I can already sense the negative ju-ju that’s sure to come when they realize I’m back there hunting “their deer.” Lord, I can’t wait till I own my own piece of dirt! Soon....not soon enough, but soooon! On the glass-half-full side of things, ifn Karma exists, and I believe it does, I should be fixing to kill a giant considering the way that dood acted!

Sounds like a bad situation for sure. In some states its against the law to impede someone from hunting on land they have permission to hunt. I watch those game warden tv shows and have seen them ticket people who shot out of spit to interfere with hunters. You may have some options legally to teach that kid a lesson. Hope it works out for you Eric and good luck!

    I feel for ya, Whitewater.
I decided to sit a stand this evening that I haven't hunted since the first weekend of rifle season. I was walking to the stand with high hopes until I realized somebody has been riding a four wheeler through my food plot down here

Deer will make people flat stupid crazy sometimes. The way the kid was acting makes me think he's seen a bigger deer in there than the one I have on camera...he's a good one, but he ain't out of the ordinary, act-like-a-jack-ass-big for up here. Called the owner when I was leaving, and he has no clue who the guy could have been, so I'm hoping I see him again. I'm sure he lives in that house and has been walking back to those woods hunting for years knowing the owner is laid back and wouldn't mind. Not worried about taking legal action on some kid wasting his money accomplishing nothing.

So, that was my fourth sit there today. I was using my new binoculars to try to look through all the tree cover around me...which is very difficult. Im set up where if he comes in to that scrape down the field edge, I'm going to have about a half a second between when I see him and when he's over the scrape. So Im refocusing trying to see through the leaves and branches which were blowing like mad, and I see what I think is a piece of deer...so I keep refocusing and shifting trying to see through the stuff...then I see enough of an opening to make out what looks like a big back and the top of the deers face...enough so that I dropped the glass as the deer was about ten yards from the scrape, grabbed my bow, readied for the shot as the adrenaline rush from hell hit, knees start shaking and foot starts jittering up and down...have to collect myself...then nothing. three minutes go by, so I pick up my binoculars and scan where I just did...nada. I kept trying to see what it was that could have fooled me, as its happened before, and I can't find anything remotely resembling a deer. I have second guessed what I thought I saw now, but I'm pretty damn sure that a deer walked out of the corn a few yards east of where I could see and turned into the wind and walked away. Frustrating. Pulled my stand and I'm heading in to a ridiculously beautiful spot at about 4am. Im going to be sitting in a finger of open hardwoods with shots to a cut bean field that has several scrapes along its edges. Impenetrable bedding area to the east, over the head high grown up 3 acres of weeds in the back of the field to the west, and big hardwoods with dynamic terrain and a creek bottom to my north. From what I could see looking into the finger from the field edge, there are at least 5 good rubs within 30 yards of the tree I'm going to climb. Going in at 4 to try to
    a. beat the other fellas in who may or may not be hunting there tomorrow
    b. walk in when the peak activity curve is at its lowest and the deer should not be up and about
    c. be able to see what the hell I'm doing without a flashlight, as clouds are going to move in and screw up the moonlight
    d. set up two decoys that I did not realize were going to weigh 25lbs and going to be such a PITA to assemble in the field while attempting to not sound like a human
    assembling two PITA decoys... and
    c. climb the tree and chill a bit before daybreak.

My wife thinks I've lost it, and I'm starting to believe her. I need to loose an arrow on something soon!

Hope y'all kill something tomorrow or at least get the chance to let some walk.
