    Default First Handgun Kill

After shooting deer with rifles, shotguns, bows...I decided to pick up a new challenge this year. Bought myself a Ruger Super Blackhawk in 44 Magnum, (10.5" barrel), and put a 2.5x8 scope on top. I also replaced the factory grip with a Hogue Kingwood...(it's a lot more pleasurable to shoot with that grip). Holy shit is this thing accurate, I was blown away by the groupings at 100 yards. Anyway, I took it Wednesday evening with the intent of smoking a doe. Had one come out at 105 yards and the Blackhawk made short work of her. I've tested 4 different factory hunting loads out of it, and the Buffalo Bore "Deer Grenades" are by far the most accurate...they also anchored this doe in her tracks. It was a thrill that I haven't felt since I put my bow down years ago and will definitely be hunting some more with this hand cannon throughout the season.

    Awesome.

What was your setup or what did you use for a rest?

It was just a standard rail with my bug taimer wrapped around it. It wasn't the most solid, but it worked. I found out that I definitely need to do some modifications to some stands and/or rig up some kind of mobile rest to take with me

Heck of a fine group there, and one that many couldn't duplicate with a rifle.

    Congrats on the doe!

    10 4.
On the ground with a shooting stick may be a decent idea.

One day I'll get this Contender 44mag setup and kill a few with it. One day.

I noticed that the Primos guys have an adjustable shooting stick with a square flat base on it for rifle hunting out of loc-on's That would probably work good with a pistol too. Good shootin!

Check out the No Miss gun rest. They usually have them at Seewee Outpost or you can order online. Local company.

man thats cool. my dad has a 44 super black hawk with a 9" barrel. Ive been wanting to shoot a deer with it for a few years. My plan is to stick to the iron sights and set up on the ground in a gobbler lounger. probably have to stick to inside of 50 yards or so. Being an average pistol shooter, ive always been impressed with the accuracy of that pistol.

Maybe this will be the motivation i need to get it out, practice with it some, and pop an old doe with it.

I'll definitely look into those rests...and Ziggy, yep, Deer Grenade. They're not cheap, but they're accurate and work as advertised.
