Default Building a gun...deciding between 257 Roberts and 280 Remington

Any info you can share about experiences to sway me one way or another? This will be solely a hunting rifle and not for LR shooting. The glass will be Swavorski 3x10x50.

.280 simple for the fact you get more bullet choices at heavier weights.
Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

.257 Roberts is a deer caliber out to 300 yards. After 300 yards energy really drops off. Hunted with one for well over 20 years and is my favorite deer caliber. Light recoil makes a great gun to share with smaller shooters as well.

Straight .280, more bullet choice than any other caliber. Load down to 7 X 57 or up close to 7RM.

I love my .257 Roberts. Been shooting it for about 40 years.

Split the difference and go 257 Roberts Improved (if you handload).

Otherwise... 257 is all you need if you are shooting at average SC deer hunting distances.

I dont hand load as of now. I have friends who do so I could get it done. What does the Roberts Improved give me over the 257?

    Why not go with a .280 lite, a 7mm08?

100-150 fps more velocity perhaps. I wouldn't bother if you don't like tuning hand loads. It's been widely reputed that improving the 257 gets it close to 25-06 performance. But I think it's fine in the original case specs.

The action I have is a LA so the 280 fits the bill. The 7mm08 is a SA I believe isnt it?
