    Looks like a gopher tortoise.

Are you close to a longleaf plantation or a big stand of longleaf pines? Or the coast of GA or FL maybe?

Yep, Gopher Turtle. We had a pile of 'em at the club between Sylvester and Cordele. Stick a piece of water hose in their burrow and hold it up to your ear to see whats at home.

And have a brown recluse run up the hose and bite you in the earhole? Thanks, but no thanks.

I was part of a research study on them at Webb when I was at Clem. We were tasked with devising a way to trap them.

Then we got sent home for building a frame on the front of the old broncos the university had and driving through the food plots collecting bugs for our entomology class.

Delta in a nutshell: Breeding grounds + small wetlands + big blocks of grass cover + predator removal + nesting structures + enough money to do the job= plenty of ducks to keep everyone smiling!

I found one near Hawkinsville Ga one time that was spray painted orange and had a loop and piece of chain thru that part of shell under his neck. He was at least 2 miles from any people.

The indigo snakes are reliant on the gopher tortoises for survival. The indigos are docile and eat the shit out of copperheads.

No brown recluse spiders but lots of Diamondbacks. The owner of the property had a son that loved to deer hunt but his attention span was short. He, being all of 8 years old, would be fine from daylight til about 9. then he would go exploring. We were tasked with finding all the turtle holes in the area and catching as many snakes as possible. With a water hose and a cap full of gas, it is unreal how many you can catch. We have caught as many as 7 out of one burrow. Naturally, they were relocated. Some to the freezer, some straight to the fryer.
