    Default Dog Advice

I grew up with dogs, but they always stayed outside and roamed the farm. My wife grew up in a city and has had a house dog most of her life. We have two boys under the age of 7 and she's dying to get a dog after not having one for 4 years.

I'm getting old and ornery, as I feel like getting a dog now is akin to having another child because our two aren't old enough to really help out. And when you consider food, vet bills, boarding costs when you're away, etc., they are a lot more expensive than moms will ever admit. However, I know one would make her happy and be good for the boys.

What are some breeds that make good house dogs?

I'd prefer something that doesn't shed (Her last dog was a Golden Retreiver and the owners of our last home are likely finding hair 5 years later). I also don't want one that barks at every sound and movement. I'm looking for something that's low maintenance and good with kids.

We went through this ourselves and decided on not having a dog at this time. Our dog passed away last year at 15 years old. I would love to have a dog for the kids and all, but all that comes with it has deterred us. We have to many obligations with sports and school functions to provide time for a pet. But good luck with your decision

Would it be possible to have your wife talk some sense into mine?

I'd stay away from terrier dogs. Not that there great dogs, but the just have a lot of spirit. A little person grabs a hand full of beard and things could get ugly. Buddy of mine has a King Charles Cavalier and I have absolutely nothing bad to say about that dog. She's as sweet of a little dog as you could want. Great temperament and loves the children. And will play ball all day. Not sure about the shedding though.

You posted in the "Retriever" forum. Only one kind of dog only real decision is yellow or black! And dog hair is part of it.

Beagle was my go to, he adored my daughter, slept with her, barked when to go out and waited on her to get home from school. Domino was a 13" beagle , would track a downed deer but was a true family pet, no shedding.

Cavalier aren't horrible shedders, I grew up with one. Was petrified of any loud noises but would blood trail a deer, and love every second of it. Then get home and sleep all day. One member has one on here that sits in the deer stand with him

Hunt with a couple of guys that have English Cockers, they are hell on a dove and wood ducks. Good bidability and the right size.

2nd vote for beagle. Had a female 13" that I grew up with. She lived to be 16. Great dog, slept with me when I was young and was always excited to see me when I came home from Clemson even when she was deaf and about blind! My parents got her for $30 from a rabbit hunter in Orangeburg.

Boxers are big but easy to house train, absolute love kids, and will protect stranger from a kid if the situation arises.
Shed a little bit not terrible.

Don't beagles bark a lot? As frufru as they are, poodle mixes seem to be popular family pets with claims that they don't shed. I know a lot of people and families with them, the golden doodles especially, and they all seem to love them. They're also very smart and with normal obedience training and socialization can be pretty cool dogs all things considered.

Cockers: correct me if I'm wrong but the ones I've been around literally don't stop moving and don't tire out.

Any dog is going to shed some. I'm going to get an english field cocker when the time comes. I could not imagine growing up without a dog.

Have you considered trying to foster a mix breed dog (or even purebred) from a rescue or shelter on a trial basis? Could skip the puppy stage and give a good dog that needs a home a place to live. They are only puppies for a short time of their lives anyways. Cavaliers are definitely one of my favorite breeds that I have dealt with at work. Super friendly and easy going, but poster child for heart failure . Not to say they will all get it, but odds are against you. Boxers are also prone to health issues as well. Most any dog will be as good as how much time you put into training them up for your household, some breeds are just easier to train than others.

If you want a good pet get a mutt.

Google "hybrid vigor" or "tiger woods"

Go rescue a young dog and call it a day. Mutts are the best. All dogs are what you make of them. Sounds like your trying to keep it economical.

I would get a pitbull. Great with kids and they don't shed.
