    Default Hornets Nest

I have what appears to be a bunch of hornets making a next in an oak tree next to me deck. Probably 25 feet up a tree. We are talking big hornets. At least 3 to 4 feet long. I defiantly don't want my kids getting lit up. Should I leave them alone or call someone to get rid of them? It's a like of them. Though about a BB gun and picking them off one at a time.

I have 3 hornets nests hanging in my house. Just leave them alone for now . When the cold weather kills them , get the nest down . They are a work of art.

I don't want to come to your house if there are hornets 3 or 4 ft long.

When I was about 12 - 14 yrs old, I was walking through the woods on a cold winter day and found a hornet's nest. I had always wanted one and was told to look for them in the winter b/c they would all be dead. So I hauled ass back to the house and grabbed my 12 gauge and off I went to blow it down. I took a fine bead and cut the limb about 3' above the nest on the first shot. It came crashing down but luckily there wasn't much damage to the nest. I was as proud as a young man could be as I made my way back to the house.

I showed it to my parents and they were excited for me. I put the nest in my room, put the gun away and back outside I went. I came in alittle while later to find that the winter didn't kill the hornets, it just put them to sleep but once they warmed up, they were PISSED!!!!! There were 3 or 4 that had made an exit and flying around my room and I could hear the rest of them inside plotting an attack on my ass. I grabbed the nest and hauled ass out into the garage, where I hit it with a lighter. Man o man, that thing went up like a fireworks factory. Little winged balls of fire were coming out everywhere but they didn't make it long.

Once everything was put out, I went back into my room and by this time, they had settled down enough for me to kill them one by one. It was a full day of emotions for me but I learned a valuable lesson that day. Never trust a man when he tells you winter will kill hornets and its safe to take the nest down.

Climb the tree. Spray w gas, light it on fire. Be creative. At a family reunion 30 years from now no one is gonna sit around and talk about the time dad called the exterminator.

Get some of those 12 gauge "Dragon's Breath" shot shells. They ought to reach far enough to torch the nest. If not, get a tall step ladder and shoot 'em again.

If there is a way to get some smoke up around and in the nest, it may quiet them down if you want to get close enough to get it in a large trash bag so you can hang it in your man cave some day.

Have you never seen the spray bottle wasp and hornet killer that sprays a stream 20+ feet? Buy 2 cans wait till dark and stand on a 5 foot ladder and spray the shit out of that into the hole in the bottom.
