Default Pros/Cons for offshore drilling off coast of SC

My sister and I own a house at Isle of Palms so I guess this is why i get all this stuff

Last couple weeks I/We have got different letters/brochures about either pit falls of offshore drilling or the benefits

Just my $.02 I would not see it as a big deal, now I do realize there are dangers of spills/fires and etc but I also see a huge economic benefit to the economy (naturally this is based on price of oil) as well as some damn good fishing spots offshore as well

Been to the Gulf Coast many times and only one time did an event alter our vacation and that was the Deep Horizon well incident but even then I think we would have been ok to go

Anything I am missing or is it just "tree hugger" approach to the environment to keep offshore drilling away from SE coast line

I drive an automobile therefore it can be implied that I am in favor of drilling for oil. I am already paying for it to happen. It would make me a hypocrite if I bitched about drilling in my back yard.

I say drill all you wanton the US but not a single ounce better be sent outside of the US. I know that's against capitalism but that's how I feel.

That's a rather large assumption. How do you know that 90% of the rigs won't be in 60' of water? I would potentially be in favor of it if it was guaranteed to be way out in the deep (> 1000' of water), but not if it was inshore of the ledge.

And will they be the same hot spots that our SC artificial reefs are? (I say this with sarcasm obviously).

I agree with the above. But I don't think Charleston could handle any more growth. Seems like they are running out of space faster than they can build as is.

Good point, reason I ask this question is for things I have not thought of
How close do they like them to be to a port

Initially I would say expand the existing plants but I can name 15 small depressed towns in South Carolina that are close to the interstate or rail system that would take the new plant in a min for the tas revenue and jobs.

Put them in Myrtle Beach, it's already a shithole.
Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

What plants are you referring too? Closest refinery probably in LA or NJ.

Sumter would be a nice spot for a refinery.

Once we open up the door, nothing will stop them from drilling through every last natural bottom we have if that's where the money is...

economically, for the refiners, it would make more sense to expand capacity at existing refineries in TX, LA, NJ, unless transportation costs prevent it. If they can ship it from Saudi Arabia and make money, they can dang sure ship it from the shelf off Dirty Myrtle.

If a new refinery were to be built, SC, GA, NC, FL and VA would get in a bidding war of epic proportions to suck up the tax base that would result.
