    Default New Claw Hammer

As y'all know I'm more into ball peen hammers and I ain't no claw hammer specialist. My question here is how can you make a tool that is pretty much perfect like a claw hammer, better? This thing has been around a few months but I just saw a Craftsman ad for it. I had no idea they made these. What do y'all think about them?

Hard to beat an Estwing, if you ask me.

I agree- a 22 oz framing length smooth face Estwing is an awesome work tool that the rest are judged against

25oz California framer by Estwing for framing and moving shit and a 13oz wood handled Plumb for doing carpentry and finish. Hammers are rarely used to drive nails anymore and hammers with moving parts are for weekend warriors and people that don't know better.
Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

I've been swinging a 40 oz ball peen the last couple weeks with my new department (driving blades and hand riveting). Damn at some of the guys that can swing a hammer in my department. Do it for 12 hours a day for 10 years and it adds up. I've only managed to hit myself twice so far.

I'm with Duck Cutter, it's just too gimmicky looking. I want my hammer to feel solid when I'm using it. I have a cousin that's 2 years younger than me, when he lived here we were best duck hunting buddies too. He's been in carpentry since he got out of high school. I remember him telling me one time that a man that know what he's doing and is using the right hammer should never hit a nail more than 2 times. One to seat it and one to drive it down.

Exactly! This is for a homeowner who does small projects. I would break that thing by Friday!

I use to use a 13oz to frame with. You had to hit a 16 3X once in a while, maybe 4 in some good SYP. That was when we hand drove everything. I worked for an old man that got his lumber from the sawmill and brought it to the job. You had to beat the squirrels out of that shit it was so green. I can remember carrying hip rafters around the house timing my steps with the bounce to keep the ends from digging into the ground. And if we needed a truss, we made it on site.

You hand drive enough shingles you wont want anything more than 16 oz. Get out there with a 22 oz wafflehead and see how long you make it. Your off hand thumb will look like cube steak after a while. I used to use a big kobalt when I was building a few decks but just never could get the feel for it. My plumb was my dads and likely older than I am. People who say a hammer is a hammer have never tried to drive a 16 into some treated wood with a $3 dollar general hammer

Hmm. So for someone that doesn't make a living swinging a hammer this is ok? Asking for a friend that doesn't make his living swinging a hammer. He's just a weekend warrior type that fixes stuff around his house. Not a professional framer
