I am afraid it is inevitable, especially with the continued loss of jobs due to automation.
It will happen in northern Europe or Switzerland , they will claim its profound social impact without waiting to see the damage to future productivity , another decade of young liberals with be of voting age, and boom we "vote" it into law as who in their right mind would veto a pay raise for themself when they aren't responsible for paying additional feseral taxes as 50% dont pay any net taxes.

I hope it doesn't happen .... But I disagree. Every Bernie supporter and Hillary voter, along with the majority of democrats that went with Trump would probably vote for him. Add in the new voter base that will be of age in 2020 and the media that puts every Trump blunder (real or made up) on the front page.
I see it shifting to him.

That's exactly why we aren't a democracy. The Founders knew and even talked about how every democracy in history has failed because the citizens voted themselves the nation's treasure.
The Elites don't fear the tall nails, government possesses both the will and the means to crush those folks. What the Elites do fear (or should fear) are the quiet men and women, with low profiles, hard hearts, long memories, and detailed target folders for action as they choose.
