    Default scoundrel found

a little while ago i noticed a wierd "worm" on my porch. first thought was its a juvi garter snake by its color and striping. but it was slimy and left a trail behind it though. 7-8" long or so stretched out and it had a wierd ass shoveled head, like a bonnet head shark. i grabbed a stick to shove it off of my porch but the stick didnt do as much shoving as it did "slicing" it into 3/4" pieces.

turns out that it is an oriental import. them folks havent really brought much good over to the US (snakeheads, asian carp, yokahama, sudoku, etc.)

after a 5 minute googling, the squirmy shithead turned out to be a predator of earthworms. refered to as "Land Planarian". this fella decided to crawl up from my rose bed up onto my front porch. send prayers and eat fish for any others that should happen to cross my path. i like my earthworms that live in my yard, they are cool and birds are the only predators that i allow to get at em.

I find them occasionally. They aren't near as tough as regular worms. I've seen them easily 12 inches long. Close to 24 if you were to ask my wife.

I'm sure a fish would eat it. Problem is see is they are extremely "fragile." You would have a hard time getting them on a hook with out them breaking apart.

Now to really blow your mind....

Most earthworms you find are also....non-native and therefore invasive.

you're right. i dont know if there are any worm species native to the US. but they are all welcome in my garden.

    more useless wormy trivia:
Charles Darwin was pretty fascinated by earthworms and studied them quite intensively.

If it's like regular planaria, each of those pieces will grow a head and make a new planaria. If you split the head, it will grow two heads.
