Default Stihl Chain Saw Oil Pumps?

A member here has a Stihl 291(?), two years old, and is now on his third oil pump. They are not a warranty item.

Do those of you who run Stihls see this problem often, or is he just having a string of bad luck?

It's not like it's a complex part so I'm not even sure why they would stop working, but if it's a regular problem with these saws I guess I'll look at other brands.

    What's the scoop?

I have a bunch of them with no issues- is he repairing himself or is a dealer fixing it?

I have 4 new(3-4 year old) models in various sizes and have never replaced the oilers. I run an SAE 30 oil, not Stihl oil.

Is the worm gear that operates the oiler in good shape?

    Yup, he's crazy...

like a fox. The dude may be coming in a little too hard and crazy but 90% of everything he says is correct.

Sort of like Toof. But way smarter.

I'm asking the question because I was about to buy a new Stihl and then by chance had this conversation with him. If I found that this was/is a fairly regular problem I'd move on to another brand. It's as simple as that. I am asking for myself and nobody else.

The dealer replaced the oil pump the first time and he's done the last two. I watched him do the last one and it's a simple one piece unit you just pull out and put the new one in. Hell, I suspect even some of you guys could do it, so I don't think it's an installation issue.

No, Silent, it is not 'Ol Black Duck. If it was, I have no doubt 'he' would be open about it.

DC, the last one I saw looked like the worm gear was fine, and all ports, etc, we're open and unclogged, but the unit wouldn't feed oil to the bar. I don't recall the brand of oil, but I suspect it was SAE 30 like most of us use.

My dad's Stihl was pre-Hugo and it has only ever needed another air filter. Its the main saw for our land.

It sounds like it might be related to oil viscosity, although I don't imagine there's much difference between brands as long as they're rated SAE 30, etc... or something possibly inside the oil reservoir, such as a floating blockage...? I haven't looked at any schematics so I don't know what it could be.

Thanks for the replies, other than Silent and Sportin', who seem to be off their meds, again.
