    Default I hate sweet gums

I couldn't find the previous thread but during the winter I asked about girdling sweet gums. Basically I was girdling some in areas where the storm had taken down some big oaks and left a hole in the canopy. The goal was to give the small oaks a head start.

I decided to girdle a few in the open so I could watch what happened to them. Long story short, they are doing fine. They have some extra trunk growth sprouting but the tops of all these trees look fine and there is no sign of the tree being in distress. Looks like hack and squirt is the only way to go.

I saw this in an article...

"The beaver will often girdle the sweet gum by stripping the bark off the tree to a height of three feet, leaving it to slowly die from exposure or infestation."

Maybe you need to girdle them a bit more.

Sweetgum is a great food source for birds and squirrels in late winter when food is scarce. They feed on the seeds of the gumballs.

I have fond memories of a huge sweetgum in the corner of a small field. It was a rare day when you couldn't find a covey under it.
