Default Can someone educate me on ponds

Daughter's finace' has 50 acre tract of land he lives on and they will eventually build a house there in a couple of years

It has a small pond on it, I am guessing may 1-2 acres tops, and it is fed by 2 springs/creeks

It has Lilly pads in it and a good big of vegetation, he was asking me about putting grass carp in there.

It does have fish, seems to have a lot of bass but not sure what else

I have seen ads for a company that comes around to local feed/seed stores and they have grass carp, bass, bream, shell crackers, catfish and crappie

Need some suggestions of where to start, also he is a student at Clemson and I told him to see if they have anyone there that can come look at his pond and tell him where to start

I have also been told that folks will fertilize ponds as well, read a little bit on SCDNR site

It's essentially a hole or impression in the ground that fills or is filled with water.

Probably best to spray herbicide on the weeds first then implement a fish stocking program.

Agreed. A pond is always smaller than a lake and is USUALLY bigger than a puddle.

Southland fisheries right outside of Columbia would be a good place to call. I worked there right out of high school and live next to it now. My mom runs the office from 8 until 12 there. Have everything you would need and want to know . 803-776-4923

But where do you draw the line? How many acres does a pond need to be to be considered a lake?

Or you sure? I always thought a pond was just a hill turned upside down.

Actually size has nothing to do with it...all about the depth. If plants can root it is a pond. If light can't get to bottom then a lake.

grass carp, mechanical or chemicals to remove unwanted vegetation
    follow a fertilizing plan
stock per recommendations by the feed store
    manage by fishing

If you want to have big brimps, stock with bluegill and largemouth. Release the small bass.
If you want to have big bass, stock with largemouth and brimps. Keep and fry all 8 - 14" bass.

You can have the aerators, cover, fertilizer, and the perfect water conditions, but growing big fish can only happen if the density is right.

tprice--check out pondboss.com. lots of info there.

in my opinion, a pond that small will be pretty hard to turn into something spectacular. just make it what you want and enjoy it. controlling weeds and water levels will be your first order(s) of business.
Ugh. Stupid people piss me off.
