    Default Grass carp

After preventing any restocking of grass carp last year, the Aquatic Management Council outvoted DNR this year and will be stocking 10,000 carp.

I will be introducing a bill to change the makeup of the board.

Who pays for the carp and who supplies them?

Santee Cooper pays and orders from Georgia I believe.

Of course the rate payers actually pay for the carp.

Is buying them from Georgia some sort of loophole?

"Triploid grass carp can only be sold in South Carolina by SCDNR approved grass carp vendors."

What's the point of certifying local vendors if they can be purchased across state lines? Maybe that is a loophole that needs to be closed.

Santee cooper used to breed their own because i worked at the hatchery one summer in Cross. Has that operation been shut down?

    I attended the meeting.

There was discussion about sticking with a number (10k) for 5 consecutive years.
That passed motions 1 and 2.

I inquired whether or not the number would fluctuate if hydrilla increased/decreased.

A very strong yes was given.

I fail to see how that is sticking to a plan to determine anything. It's the same they have always done.
There are some that see the need to manage for the benefit of fish and wildlife.

It's a shame we are losing Mrs. Eidson. She was always a voice of reason.
Be proactive about improving public waterfowl habitat in South Carolina. It's not going to happen by itself, and our help is needed. We have the potential to winter thousands of waterfowl on public grounds if we fight for it.

Jeannie Eidson and Bob Perry definitely have fish, wildlife and native aquatic vegetation in their best interest.

That's ashamed, Bob is a good guy and manager of the resource with the limits he had. That is only my opinion.

I'll be anxious to see who takes Larry McCords place.

If you can keep the grass isolated you will be ok.

The moment an time it starts to be seen, and knee jerk reaction or not, ANY GRASS. Remember there is still those memories of matts of that dreaded weed brings many nightmares.

You have to HAVE to keep the grass back beyond the bridge.

I'm surprised they didn't want 50k a year after that grass has been accumulating around Harrys the past 2 years.

What about keeping the fish below the bridge?

I think you're all getting there. Ideally, we would want to manage different parts of the lakes in different ways for different purposes. If we can ever just realize that, many things will fall into place.

Amazing how the same thing can cause 2 separate reactions. When I think of those mats I do not have nightmares but fond memories of schools of 7lb bass crushing spooks over the top of them or eating carolina rigged lizards around them. I also have fond memories of killing all sorts of waterfowl around them (Mallards, Widgeons, Canvasback, Pintails, Bluebills, Ringnecks, etc.)
