Default Trailer Modification Question (Metal Integrity)

If I wanted something like an eyebolt to hook a winch cable to, would it be best to drill through the tongue and get a stainless or hardened eyebolt and just secure it down with washers and locknuts, or should I have something welded on there.

I didn't know if drilling a hole would weaken the metal integrity, or is this something I shouldn't be concerned about?

    Thanks.

If your talking about attaching near the tounge why not just wrap the cable around the metal and hook it to itself? If you do go with an eyebolt I would only use one that has a solid eye and not just a rolled eye. I've seen a couple of those rolled eyes open up under too much stress

Why would you use a winch cable? They aren't quite designed for sudden jerks and snatches, they are designed for slow steady pulling. I'd buy two heavy duty ratchet straps, one for the front and one for the rear and just strap down whatever I didn't want to move.

I'm talking a solid eyebolt with a working load of #5500.

I have 1 heavy strap, but after a 375mi tow Wednesday, I came home to find it had come loose. (Due to bouncing around, and such.)

I want the winch hook-up as an extra piece of mind.

I figure shoot the holes through the trailer, drop in the eyebolt, and back it with a few oversized, hardened washers and be good to go...

You don't want that shock load on your winch.

I know you like to overthink and over do things but in this situation it's really not necessary. Get four quality wheel straps and strap the four corners down. That way the buggy can bounce up-and-down on it suspension because the tires/wheels are strapped down.

Use chains, load binders and ratchet binders. Secure at 4 points, issues solved.
Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

    Thanks, y'all.

It just seemed like a viable option.

I'll look and see what sort of existing anchor points there are to utilize the 4-pt method.

It's as fixed as it's gonna get. Three shops and they can't nail it down. I'm over it. I just don't drive 46-49 consistently. Problem solved.

    I appreciate your concern.

I thought you were a Marine? Real Marines know how to do shit- they may fuck it all up but damnit they do it. They are the cream of the crop - the Chosin few, spawn of Chesty Puller. Weld the fucking tie down hook to the trailer with JB weld and let it rip. Pull that mother fucker all the way to the shores of Tripoli. JUST DO IT

As a Marine, I could fuck up an anvil at times. I think some know that luck oftentimes doesn't quite favor me.

In this case, I'd prefer not to attempt such fate.
