Quail are incidental to coyotes if they catch one. They do not go looking for them.

Fescue is good for domestic grazing. I don't even think insects care much for it. And chicks need the insects.

Habitat changes have had the biggest hit on quail. Herbicides, insecticides and "better" agricultural techniques have taken their toll.

Ants came along about the time we got all the habitat changes. Not to mention urban expansion.

The hawks and other predators have been here as long as quail.

    Long leaf pines!!!
"The best things in life make you sweaty"

Thanks for the heads up RP. I stopped by the booth and spoke with her today. She is going to connect me with some local contacts to work on some management practices for the small wild coveys at my place.

Everything was going great until I mentioned your name...just kidding she had good things to say about you.

I hate it but I'm skeptical about the chances for reestablishing hunt-able numbers of quail in SC without some sort of drastic human population correction event. Even SCDNR's showplace site for quail management, Webb, doesn't have enough quail to make it worth keeping a dog trained. I know a few very well heeled guys that pour trainloads of money into management for quail and they have enough to keep themselves happy but it ain't anything Havilah would have written about. If I had enough money to reestablish quail, I'd travel to Texas (in my private jet) and hunt wild birds there instead.

I can't say I have ever seen a group as intensely set upon making things difficult ( SCidgets) when it comes to managing for a species.

JFK add/manage for what the species likes/needs and get rid of what it doesn't. Checked that box? Ok now then lets get rid of what eats the species, other than you of course, and your done.

Snakes eat quail eggs and hatchlings. Kill snakes too.

PB, long leafs are great as long as there are not too many of them. Invite these folks to look.

In Texas, it is a whole different habitat. Can't compare to here. But Texas hunting is nice. And that's not the only spot.

We've got a couple coveys at our place, make it a point to not hunt them though. I know of a couple places around that have wild birds as well, one place has nice number killed what seems like every year. They're only killing a bird or so out of each covey, try not to kill two purposely... . I keep hearing about some places around Chester too.
