    Default Sharpening Stone

What have y'all found to be the best set of sharpening stones for knife sharpening.

I don't want a work sharp. I had one and sold it.

I can get a knife pretty sharp with the pocket stones I have but want something a little more ergonomical for sharpening larger blades.

    What y'all recommend?

what didnt you like about the work sharp? just curious.

i can get a knife stupid sharp but i think they heat the blade up too much and mess with the temper. the edge doesnt seem to last as long as a knife sharpened on a stone

They work, I don't deny that.

Like you, I think they can potentially damage the temper of the blade.
I've also read on some various blade forums about the edge not lasting as long (don't remember what they said caused it buy they gave some pretty sound reasoning).

Finally, I guess I prefer the stones just because it is something less and less people know how to do and it is somewhat a source of pride being able to take a rock and being able to put a good edge on a knife

Every blade should be finished on a stone.

You just don't necessarily need to start there.

To answer your original question, look here. I have bought a couple from them and have been pleased.

Do yourself a favor and never put oil on a stone. Use water. Why, you ask?... Because, one day, you won't have any oil.

ETA: Truthfully, every blade should be finished on a strop.

I bought a manual work sharp. I like it a lot

I use their economy double side med/fine after I've "fixed" the blade with a belt sander.

I, then, use their Arkansas soft/hard oil stone... notice my above recommendation for a water stone. You can use water on an oil stone... you just can't use water after you've used oil one good time.

After that, I hit the strop.

When I do shave, I do so with a straight razor. I don't have any problems with this method. Of course, my straight razor never needs "fixing".

Talk to the guys at this site and check out their section on 'Sharpening'. They also have all the supplies you need, but I haven't compared their prices to the site turbo listed.
