Get one and try. If not you'd have a pretty hiking partner. An old neighbor had two walkers that laid around his yard all the time and would walk with him everywhere he went. I don't see a difference between that and a bluetick.

We used to raise white Shepards when I was growing up and had a big male named cowboy that would retrieve a dove and loved it

Most german shepards will fetch all day and love water.

I've never been around a bluetick, so I've got no clue on their fetching or water tendencies.

The challenge might be with drive, from what I've seen the non-retrieving bloodlines can get bored with it easily.

They are scent hounds. They will trail anything they come across......Squirrels, sparrows, deer, people, etec.

It's possible to train them but scent hounds have a low IQ compared to other breeds.

    Catdaddy does make a point.

Scent dogs are programmed differently. I have no doubt that you could teach any dog to sit with you, stay when you commanded, and in the end, pick up your ducks.
But with hounds, they are gonna trail/sniff anything they cross.
Picture sending him on a retrieve and him darting all over following a raccoon's scent and forgetting about your duck.
You can't "train" that out of him.

Just get a lab Rubberhead. There's a reason they are the most used.

A tri color Bluetick is the prettiest dog you will ever have other than a tricolor beagle, but they are not like a BL or my preference a Chessie. They are a running dog that can be your companion but not a retriever .

I grew up with them. I wouldn't opt that route personally for ducks but they suit their calling well in other fields admirably, doable yes. Knowing you, with your patience and temperment it might just happen and make a neat life story to boot. If you know them well enough and love demeanour and looks I say go for it buddy.

Agree with the nose and drive being the issue with needing a hiking or retrieving hound. Blueticks and bluetick crosses are trailing sumbitches that have no concept of hunting close. Catdaddy hit the nail on the head. Can't squeeze blood from a turnip.

My great uncle...in his day was a " prominent" member of the coon hunting world...I always heard him say " blue ticks and democrats are gonna ruin this country."
That's as far as my knowledge goes on BT.

That made me laugh out loud and I don't do that often.

I think I'm hearing what I, kind of, expected. I will probably get a bluetick at some point but may have to wait until I retire and I may even take up coon hunting. When/If I do, I won't make him or myself miserable by trying to force him to be something he isn't.

RH, you gotta admit he wasn't far off with at least part of that statement.

The first time you get an invite to a good duck hunt and you ask, "Mind if I bring my dog?", please take a video of the guy's expression when you show up with a Blue Tick.

That is funny too...who would have thought that a blue tick duck dog was so full of joke potential.

My buddy has a bloodhound that retrieves doves but damn man when you get the bird back it looks and feels like a soggy ass pancake.

If you can make a 7 yr old fox hound that has never been on a shock collar, stop running a smelly buck, I believe you could teach the SOB to read the Encyclopedia..
