If you're a Gamecock fan, especially baseball, then you know of Bill Golding. You may not know his name, but you know him. I just heard he's entered Hospice care. Damn.

Here's some background for those that don't know of him.

I've never been to a game that he wasn't there.

Loved sitting next to him at the Sarge as a kid. Great fan.

I am a tiger fan. I grew up in Lexington and loved watching baseball as a kid. So my dad and I went to a bunch of USC games as a kid. I called him the "game cock man" as a kid. There should be a better word than "fan" to describe his love of the yard birds. Sad to here.

This makes me sad. He sat near our seats at Willy B. I had always noticed him and talked to him a few times. Hard to not notice or talk to him.

When our first born son was around 2 years old we took him to his first game. After a TD, Mr. Golding jogged up the steps and gave my son a high five, which made his day. He then reached in his pocket pulled out a $1 bill and gave it to my son, smiled, and went back to celebrating back down the steps. We have that $1 tucked in the journal his mom has kept for him.

    He'll be missed.

I have been to a few SC baseball games and certainly noticed Mr Golding. He was a great fan and it's a great story. It's certainly a loss to the program.

However, to fly a flag in your stadium recognizing an individual fan is a slippery slope. It's a can of worms that I wouldn't open

I made a mistake and drew a distinction between a member of the board of trustees who donated $1 million toward the renovation of the stadium, and a gentleman known as "Oot Oot".

It's not as if SC Athletics has made short sighted emotional decisions before. Thar colossal Spurrier banner seems perfectly appropriate in hindsight.

It's all good, man. They just had to take the rainbow flag down long enough to fly it.

Seriously - fly the flag in that man's honor! Every park needs somebody like him. It's part of what makes baseball THE greatest sport there is.
I don't need my name in the marquee lights....
