Default Wood Duck Box Post Length

Just wanted to see how deep y'all bury your posts for wood duck boxes? I know the box opening should sit at about 6' off the ground just trying to figure out if getting 8' posts and burying the posts about 2' would be enough? Thanks!

I'd get longer posts or thru bolt multiple posts together. Thru bolted 2 landscaping timbers together works well. And as far as how deep, well that honestly depends on how firm the ground is.

Can you put them on existing trees. Like small trees on islands over the water.

I'd use some washers to give the tree room to grow and still add a shield for predators

Tough thing with any type of tree mount is that predators can always get to the box from above even if it is an island of trees in the middle of a pond or lake

I would not put on a tree . . . ever. That's just asking for death. We haven't had problems with the poles provided by DNR. We also concrete ours in though.

I think you should be fine with burying them 2 foot. I've got 8 up on my property and the posts are all probably that deep. All but one of them are mounted in the water and they all held up fine.

    Did you use 8' posts?

I've used 8' posts, but all are in solid or firm ground, set with some gravel below and around the post.

If I was setting it in a real soft bottom marsh area I'd look at 10' posts. But when mounted over water you don't really need the box up that high.
