    Default Lower units and salt

So I got to tearing into two lowers today that were obviously used in salt. My intent was to do a good check and replace the impeller, gaskets, etc and anything else that needed attention. Found some serious gunk and salt buildup.

A word to the wise, wash plenty of fresh water through following every trip out in the salt, and do regular maintenance.

From lower unit #1: This is the housing that seals the bearing at the top of the main shaft. The water punk impeller housing sits on top of this piece. Water travels thru it after being sucked into the grates on its way to the impeller then shoots up to the motor. Followed by pics of the seals that were removed from said plate, which keep the foot grease in the foot and the water in its place. With all the corrosion I had to break the plate to get it out, hence the partial piece.

From lower unit #2: Not as bad as #1, but still not good. Last 2 are before seal removal and after.

Does that motor have the hose fitting or do you have to use muffs? On many models, that hose connection just flushes the power head and any water that make it to the pump housing is going the wrong way to do much flushing and just draining out. Use muffs and the whole moter gets washed under pressure.

You know me, I don't mess with 4 strokes. These were from '95 and 2000 Yamahas, respectively.

    Muffs only.

I have a plastic drum cut that I can lower the foot in. I fill it up with water and let the motor run for a while in it. I keep the hose running in it to keep fresh water coming in. It also helps with drastically cutting down on the noise.

I run mine for three 5 min cycles on the muffs after a day. On the second run I will usually disconnect the hose from the faucet and fill it with dawn dish detergent and run it through. Ole 94' Johnson just keeps plugging along..

We run by the nearest river landing and dunk the trailer and motors, fire them up and run them, easier than doing it at the house.

Done. Even taking the head cover and water jackets apart on the motor. Got a couple bolts giving me hell though.
