Default What's going on with this tree?

This is a Sweet Gum that I've never figured out why it's as screwy looking as it is. There are a few others with similar 'knots', but nothing as drastic as this.

Any idea what caused it? The tree is at least 25-30 years old and while smaller than others, always appears healthy.

You sound like SW. Thought he was in a league of his own, but guess not, Grasshopper.

Looks like a good candidate for some chainsaw work.
Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

I think you've hit it. The previous owner of the property, the developer, cleared all the vines on the two lots I bought because he was going to build here, but changed his mind just days before we came rolling along. I'd forgotten how thick this place was with vines since I keep it fairly cleared out from them growing back.

The closest barbed wire fence is about 30 yds at the property line.

I've thought about it, but it's one of those unusual ones that isn't in the way on the far side of the garage so thus far it has avoided my wrath. We'll see...

    Thanks.
